A Garda in Carlow has reportedly been suspended after €100,000
worth of cannabis went missing from Carlow Garda station.
According to the Irish Independent, the officer is not suspected of
taking the drugs.
However, the paper reports he's instead being investigated for
allegedly not storing the cannabis properly.
Earlier in the week, the Nationalist reported that €100,000 worth of
cannabis went missing from Carlow Garda Station.
It's understood the discovery was made after Gardaí in Carlow
went to retrieve evidence in connection with the drug seizure.
In a statement issued to Beat News, a Garda spokesperson said:
'A criminal investigation is currently underway following reports that a
significant amount of seized drugs were removed from a Garda Station in the
East of the country.
"Enquires are ongoing. No additional information is
available at this time."
Garda/State corruption: The facts
https://web.archive.org/web/20240126194701/https://www.publicinquiry.eu/category/morris-tribunal/
The Garda Inspectorate report has been published and already we’re witnessing the usual bullshit response particularly from politicians with a vested interest in defending our corrupt political/administrative system.
So for anybody out there who may be unsure of the facts surrounding this scandal here they are – without any bullshit:
Fact One: Ireland is an intrinsically corrupt state. We see this fact constantly reiterated when the corrupt political/administrative regime works day and night to protect the interests of the corrupt.
Fact Two: The inspectors report confirms that there is widespread corruption within the Gardai. This fact has been publicly known since the Morris Tribunal.
Fact Three: No prosecutions were brought against any Gardai as a result of the Morris Tribunal.
Fact Four: No prosecutions will be brought against any Gardai as a result of the current spate of corruption.
Fact Five: The then Justice Minister, Michael McDowell, failed to introduce effective measures to eliminate Gardai corruption. This failure can only be because McDowell is an incompetent or the legislation was deliberately formulated to give the impression of accountability and transparency while allowing the widespread corruption to continue. I suspect the latter is the case.
Fact Six: The events in the run-up to the establishment of the Morris Tribunal are practically identical to the events in the run-up to the current spate of corruption.
That is:
Denial – secrecy – blame the whistleblowers – secrecy – attack those calling for an investigation – secrecy – refuse to apologise when the truth outs – secrecy – pretend to act as a result of the investigation – secrecy – allow the corrupt system to remain in place in order to protect the interests of those who benefit.
Fact Seven: Political/administrative corruption lies at the heart of all our problems. Corruption is so ingrained, so much a part of our culture that it’s not even recognised as a problem.
The disease of corruption will continue to inflict horrendous damage on Ireland and its people until such time as it is acknowledged and acted upon as the core reason for our failure as a state.
€4K MORE OF GARDA CASH MISSING
A PROBE into the disappearance of money from a garda station has revealed that another €4,000 is missing.
A garda who was arrested last week in relation to the theft of €9,000 is now suspected of stealing another cash haul from a secure area of the Dublin station.
As the inquiry into the handling of money by gardai intensifies, the Herald has learned that similar investigations have now been launched at three other stations.
A source said: "Now we know that even more cash has been stolen. This is a very bad situation for the gardai."
They added that staff in Balbriggan are extremely upset about the situation.
"But it is not the only station in Dublin where this has happened – there are at least three others being looked at," the source said.
The garda at the centre of the Balbriggan inquiry was quizzed by detectives last week before being released without charge. He is in his mid-30s and is currently suspended from duty.
A file on the suspect, who is considered "a loner" by colleagues, is now being prepared for the DPP.
An audit unit from the National Bureau of Investigation is working on the case in the station and is understood to be investigating "certain matters" going back years.
The Herald previously revealed that a number of officers have received internal notifications that they may have been involved in a possible technical breach of disciplinary regulations over the procedures for the handling, storing and moving of cash in the garda station.
However "this absolutely does not" imply any suggestion that the particular officers were involved in any wrongdoing. It is merely a matter of "fair procedure" instigated by senior garda management about the case.
The issue from came to light following the robbery of a post office and shop in Lusk in January. Gardai arrested three suspects and recovered the €26,600 that was stolen in the robbery.
Locker
The car used by the raiders was brought to a garage in Swords where it was inspected by forensics and scene of crime officers who collected, photographed, bagged and documented the stolen cash.
Statements were made confirming the amount and the money was removed and held by the gardai as evidence.
The cash was then placed in two evidence bags in a "secure walk-in locker" at Balbriggan Garda Station. It is understood that the locker even has a specially reinforced door.
Garda suspended after €100,000 worth of cannabis went missing from Carlow garda station

A garda has been suspended after €100,000 worth of cannabis went missing from Carlow Garda Station.
The “highly respected” male officer is not suspected of taking the drugs but is being investigated for allegedly not following proper procedures in relation to the storage of the cannabis in the station.
The drugs were placed in a secured locker in the station when taken from it and senior sources say that well over 100 people including civilians had access to this area during the timeframe that it was stored in the locker.
The drugs have not been recovered and no one has been arrested in relation to the theft.
It has emerged that the now suspended garda was involved in the raid that originally led to the seizure of the drugs and the officer is considered a “very proactive” member of the force.
The significant cannabis seizure was made over the Christmas period by gardaí in Carlow.
It was recovered as part of an ongoing investigation into drug dealing and criminality in the area.
The drugs haul was subsequently stored in the garda’s locker while the investigation into the seizure continued.
That inquiry progressed and last week a suspect was arrested on suspicion of drugs offences linked to the €100,000 worth of cannabis.
However, when gardaí went to retrieve the evidence from the locker as part of the interrogation process, it emerged that the drugs had been removed.
A criminal investigation was established late last week to try and establish how the drugs were removed and by who, and to locate the cannabis.
Searches have been carried out of the station including in offices, garages, outhouses and in bins but no sign of the drugs.
It’s understood that gardaí at the station have also been asked to consent to their lockers being searched to eliminate them from inquiries.
In a statement a garda spokesperson said: “A criminal investigation is currently underway following reports that a significant amount of seized drugs were removed from a Garda Station in the East of the country.
“Enquires are ongoing. No additional information is available at this time.”
Poison pen letter rocks Garda Siochana
https://www.sundayworld.com/news/crimedesk/poison-pen-letter-rocks-Garda-siochana
The Gardai have been rocked by a poison pen scandal smearing a top officer.
A letter has been circulated around stations falsely accusing one of the country’s most senior officers of running an “utterly corrupt” promotion system in an attempt to smear him.
The disturbing letter has been emailed to hundreds of gardai and left in canteens and offices in |stations around Dublin.
It accuses assistant commissioner Fintan Fanning, who was in charge of Human Resources (HR) in the force until this week, of running “a corrupt HR process”.
The letter, which has been seen by the Sunday World, appears to have been penned by a disgruntled garda who did not get promoted. It is headed with the phrase “Accountability Stops Here”.
Fanning moved to take charge of policing in the east of the country this week and is seen as a dark horse for the position of Commissioner, which was recently advertised.
He has had a long and successful career and is seen as a compromise internal candidate for the vacant top job. There is no truth to suggestions that he operated the internal promotions process inappropriately.
This has led to suspicions that there is a smear campaign being orchestrated to damage him so he does not get the Commissioner’s job.
The letter makes extremely libellous allegations, many of which cannot be printed, but one falsely alleged that promotions are decided “during barbeques at Fintan’s lovely home”.
The letter has been circulated and is quickly making its way to hundreds of Gardai, who are bemused by its contents.
This photograph shows Fintan Fanning with health minister Leo Varadkar last weekend at a party to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Westmanstown Gaels GAA club, where Fanning volunteers his time.
He is now based in Mullingar station because the head of human resources is being changed to a civilian post.
It is understood that several internal candidates have applied for the Commissioner’s job, including Deputy Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan, who is running the force on an interim basis. Acting Deputy Commissioner John Twomey is also regarded as being a possible leading candidate.
Noirin O’Sullivan is seen as the front runner for the job if it is filled internally. However, it is expected that the job will go to an outsider because Fine Gael has vowed to clean up the force and political opinion is this cannot be done by a serving garda because they will have been exposed to the system for too long.
O’Sullivan’s chances of getting the Commissioner’s job received a serious blow this week when whistleblower Sergeant Maurice McCabe came forward with a new dossier alleging the penalty points system is still being abused.
An investigation has been ordered, but O’Sullivan’s authority could be fatally undermined if it is proven that gardai are cancelling penalty points despite claims that she has cleaned up the system since she became interim commissioner in March.
Garda probe after shotgun seized in 2009 ends up back on the streets
The shocking discovery came after the weapon had been seized last year as part of a garda operation against two feuding criminal gangs in the Midlands.
https://www.sundayworld.com/crime/irish-crime/garda-probe-after-shotgun-seized-in-2009-ends-up-back-on-the-streets/a1663046619.html
Gardaí have launched a criminal investigation into how a confiscated pump-action shotgun ended up back on the streets.
The shocking discovery came after the weapon had been seized last year as part of a garda operation against two feuding criminal gangs in the Midlands.
But the deadly weapon was quickly found to have been one stolen from a gun-dealer in 2004 and then seized by gardaí in a search in 2009.
Records “showed that it was supposed to be still in possession of gardaí in the east of the country”, according to the Garda Press Office.
“This firearm had originally been stolen in a burglary in 2004 and was recovered by gardaí during a search of a premises under warrant in the east of the country in 2009.”
