Serving Garda turned whistleblower alleges other members of force lied under oath

The officer claims several members of the force lied on oath



A serving Garda has turned whistleblower – to allege other members of the force lied under oath in a court.

We have learned that the officer has made a so-called protective disclosure to Garda HQ in recent weeks alleging officers committed perjury.

The officer claims two members of the force lied on oath – and also in statements connected to the case. We cannot name the case for legal reasons, but sources confirmed it relates to Garda interaction with a group of minors and took place in recent years.

The officer has now made a protected disclosure to a specialist section within Garda Headquarters in Dublin. We have also learned that another member of the force has come forward to make a separate protected disclosure, backing up the first officer’s allegations.

“The protected disclosures both allege that gardai lied on the witness stand,” a source tells us. “The garda is absolutely certain they lied. He is convinced of it and has now made the protected disclosure. He is not giving up on it. He wants action taken.”

We have learned the disclosures allege that gardai lied in the court case – but privately admitted it and later apologised. And it is also alleged one admission of perjury was made in the court during a break in the case – and the complainant thinks the official recording system may have picked it up.

Making such a complaint is a rarity in the force. Its protected disclosures office was only set up in January last year. It is a confidential mechanism for members of the force to highlight alleged wrongdoing to a confidential recipient, who then begins an independent investigation into the complaints.

A Garda Press Office spokeswoman told us: “In general, all allegations made under

 protected disclosures are treated seriously and are examined for any potential discipline and/or criminal matters that may arise.”
